英語日記②

Translation for Film:これは、17年ほど前にTESOLを勉強していたときの Teaching and Testing ESL Reading and Writing というクラスでの課題です。「Journal Response」という課題で、英語で日記を書くというものでした。合計で3週間ほど書きました。わりとおもしろいことも書いているので、ぜひ読んでみてください。

映画の字幕って、ひと目見ただけでわからなきゃダメだもんね。

そうよね。だから、字幕の翻訳はとても難しいのよ。

赤字の添削は、「今なら私はこう書くかな」という私自身によるアップデートです。だいぶ昔に書いた日記なので、その後学んだこともたくさんあります。

Translation for Films

In the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Director Blake Edwards, starring Audrey Hepburn, an American movie, 1961), there is a scene in which Paul, played by George Peppard, opens the door for a guest (his patron). Since Paul has a dog mask on his head for some reason, he puts it on his face and says, “Trick or treat.” Wearing such a mask reminds him of Halloween; that’s why Paul makes such a remark spontaneous response.

By the way, I also saw this movie with Japanese subtitles or a Japanese-dubbed version when I was in Japan. If I remember correctly, that line had been replaced by “Bow wow.” I was impressed by this clever translation. It is true that the audience must understand subtitles at a glance. In this case, a translation, which differs from the meaning of the original line, will not affect the content of the film. So the translator used “Bow wow” instead of “Trick or treat,” with which the Japanese audience was unfamiliar. This is an example that translation should meet needs depending on the field or the circumstances.

【解説】bow wow」は日本語の「ワンワン」にあたり、犬の鳴き声を表します。「remark」を「sponteneaous response」(とっさの応答)に変えました。前者だと「コメント」や「意見」のニュアンスがあり、後者のほうがふさわしいと思ったからです

Teacher’s comment: I know what you mean. I often watch Spanish dubbed movies and the same applies.
